The Essential Guide to Moving Gel Mattresses

Expert Tips for Safe, Secure, and Stress-Free Transport

cross country movers

For more than twenty years, gel mattresses, otherwise known as memory foam mattresses, have revolutionized the way we get our sleep. They have been able to offer unequaled comfort and support in a way that traditional spring mattresses cannot. They also do so for a more than competitive price, and as a result they are now commonly found in homes, apartments, and even some hotels and motels across the country.

When it comes to moving them, however, gel mattresses present their own unique set of problems. Moving a mattress is often problematic anyway, but gel mattresses have the ability to increase the difficulty factor. However, if done correctly, the gel mattress can be move without damage to the unit or any reduction in its life span. There are a number of variables that one needs to be aware of.

Size Matters

Before moving a mattress of any size, take measurements and notes. You need to know the size of the unit as well as any and all the entranceways and doors that it will be traveling through. Also remember that the container you might use will have to be slightly larger than the mattress itself, so take those figures into account when doing your calculations.

Clear A Path

This applies to both the location the gel mattress is coming from and the location it is going to. Make sure the path out of one home and into another is free and clear of any obstacles that you could get hung up on or trip over. The last thing you want is to see something damaged because you did not plan ahead.

Can Gel Mattresses Be Folded?

The short answer is yes, as the gel or foam within the mattress is naturally flexible and can accommodate bending up to a certain degree. It should be noted, however, that these mattresses should not remain folded for any prolonged period, as doing so could compromise the structure and adversely affect its comfort and support quality.

Should folding be the preferred option for your move, pay attention to the following steps:

  1. Remove the bedding. Strip off all bedspreads, comforters, sheets, mattress protectors or any other layers that may be on the bed. Run a vacuum unit over the mattress to remove any dust, pollen, or pollutants.
  2. Place into a mattress bag. Mattress bags are an invaluable moving tool as they are designed to contain the mattress and protect it against dirt, liquid spills, and any other potentially damaging issues. Once the mattress is inside the bag, remove as much of the air as possible; this will make the gel mattress easier to manage when it comes to rolling or folding.
  3. Fold it up. Gently fold the mattress, making use of the gel foam’s pliability to get the mattress where you need it to be. Often, rolling the mattress is the preferred course, as this lessens the stress points on the foam and helps to bolster its integrity. Be advised, you will most likely require a partner in order to efficiently maneuver the mattress for folding. Gel mattresses weigh more than their spring-loaded counterparts and they are often heavier.
  4. Strap it down. Use moving straps to secure the folded mattress, tightening them down to prevent the mattress from unfurling like a flag during transport. You want the gel mattress to remain in a manageable state for moving once you arrive at your new location.

 Transporting A Gel Mattress

Once the mattress has been prepped, the actual transport begins. This is how you do it safely and efficiently.

  1. Flatten it out. Try not to keep the mattress folded or rolled for extended periods. If at all possible, transport the mattress flat as this reduces unwanted wear and tear on the unit.
  2. Protect the mattress. Make sure the gel mattress is properly insulated from any sharp edges or other objects. Tools, knives, pretty much anything with a point has the capability to puncture the mattress or tear it open should either one of them shift unexpectedly during transport.
  3. No stacking required. Some people like to stack items on top of their gel mattress, thinking it best utilizes the space. This could not be further from the truth. Lightweight items will not present much of a problem, but heavy furniture or loaded down boxes might, as they can compress and wear out the memory foam.
  4. Watch your temps. Gel mattresses are extremely susceptible to rapidly changing temperatures. In colder scenarios, the mattress may harden up, and in the heat, the mattress may become way too soft. In either instance, the mattress becomes prone to damage. Either plan your move around the weather or take steps to make sure the gel mattress is not left to the elements for prolonged periods of time.
  5. Stability is key. Make sure the mattress is kept stable during transport. It should not be able to move, shift, slide around, while in the transport vehicle. Unexpected movements may damage not only the mattress, but also other items in the immediate vicinity.

Arriving at your destination

When you reach your new home, have a friend help you bring the mattress inside, remove it from the mattress bag, and lay it out flat to resume its normal shape. Give it plenty of time to resume its normal shape, as gel mattresses usually readily adapt to whatever position they are placed in. Once the mattress feels and looks right, it can be placed on its base and the mattress topper and bed clothes reapplied.

Summary

Moving a gel mattress or memory foam mattress can indeed be difficult, as they are heavier and more ungainly than spring units. By following the above guidelines, it can be performed efficiently and effectively, allowing you to continue enjoying the perks and benefits of a gel mattress in your new home, providing the comfort and rest that you have grown accustomed to.

Of course, if all this sounds like a but much, or at least more than you care to take on yourself, you can always contact a local, regional, or national shipping company and they will be more than happy to take care of it for you.
