Moving To California

If you’ve considered, or are planning to move to California, you’re not alone. With more than 39 million people living there, it is the most populous state in America. With year round sunshine, stretches of beach, the diversity of nature, and a trendsetter in culture and innovations, it’s no wonder it’s called the Golden State.

Weather

Everyone thinks year round sunshine when they think of California. And in most cases, this is correct. Most of California has a climate much like the Mediterranean. The climate throughout the state does however vary due to its large size. During summer along the coast, it can be quite cool with summer fog along the shoreline. Summer temperatures can reach above 100 degrees in some parts, with low temperatures averaging 50 – 60 degrees during the winter. Rain and snow also exist in California. February being the wettest month in Los Angeles, averaging about 10 - 15 inches during its rainy season. For snow, head up to the High Sierras.

Cost Of living

Housing - California is the third most expensive state to live in the USA, with housing being the biggest expense. California is home to many million-dollar mansions, and to live in one of the major cities of California, such as Los Angeles or San Francisco, you will need to consider the high prices for renting or owning a home. The prices are often unattainable to many of the upper middle class. If however you’re moving from New York to California, for the same price you’d pay in New York for a tiny apartment, you’ll have much more space out in California. You might feel like your living in your own little mansion.

Taxes - Income taxes in California are high. According to the Tax Foundation, the state is the fourth highest in the country. On average, Californians pay $1,991 per year in state income taxes.

Sales tax in California is also the highest in the country.

Property tax rates in California are however among the lowest in the country.

Transportation

California does have a transportation system, which is continuously expanding in the larger populated cities. If you live in San Francisco, you might not need a car. However, for the rest of California, the state has been designed for use with a car and offers a vast freeway system.

Nature In California

If you love nature, California is sure to be a nature lover’s wonderland. There is something for everyone: Beaches, hiking, surfing, skiing, national and state parks, camping, whale watching, rock climbing, motocross and more!

California is renowned for its agriculture, producing much of the produce that the country depends on. It is also the countries largest dairy producer.

Risks Of Living In California

With the beauty of California’s nature, there also come some risks. The all common earthquake, mudslides and wildfires are some of the hazards. The Department of Conservation has provided information on what to do Before, During and After an Earthquake.

If you’re still considering, or have already checked into the hotel California, enjoy your stay and check out the vast amount of opportunities the state has to offer. If you’re still deciding on a city, you might be interested in Moving West to Los Angeles or Moving West to San Francisco.
